Child & Youth Therapy

It can be hard to be a kid!  This is a period of intense growth and development and it can feel confusing and overwhelming.  As children are maturing, they are also exploring their identity and growing independence in the modern world.  Counselling for children and youth allows your child to express themselves and learn the skills they need to handle the challenges of life.

Young children

In therapy, children learn by doing, which means working with the child through play, art, and talking, and may also involve the whole family doing activities to build attunement and understanding of each other.  Your child is unique and decisions about the best intervention require collaboration with you, and assessment of your child’s needs. Together, we will decide on an approach tailored to your child.

Theraplay informed services work with the whole family to create playful and caring child-adult interactions that foster joyful shared experiences. Engaging in this way helps parents to regulate the child’s behaviour while communicating love, joy and safety to the child which supports the child in feeling cared for, connected and secure.  This secure attachment is believed to be the basis of lifelong good mental health as well as the foundation for resilience in the face of adversity.

Adolescents

Therapy can provide teens and adolescents with a safe and confidential space to explore their emotions, learn effective skills and strategies for coping with negative feelings, dealing with relationships, and teach them how to take control of their mood through positive changes to their thoughts and behaviours. Counselling can help teens develop a healthy sense of self and maintain a positive outlook on life.

Individual Counselling

Life can be hard, and we all need support sometimes.  Reaching out to a professional therapist is not a sign of weakness. It is a sign that you are brave enough to take the first step toward a happier and more peaceful life.

We often first notice the signs of stress and declining mental health in our bodies.  You may be experiencing irritability, changing moods, difficulty sleeping, fatigue, or an increase in worries.  Individual therapy can help you relieve symptoms of anxiety and depression, navigate major life changes, or simply help you to manage stress and enjoy life again.

“Life is a balance between holding on and letting go” - Rumi

When you become tired of holding on, it is your natural tendency to let go. The very act of releasing is powerful – it leads to healing, it helps recharge your energy and put things into perspective.  When you let go, you start to feel renewed and you gain clarity so you can pursue things that really matter.

Parent Coaching

Parenting isn't easy!  Good parents struggle with normal parenting concerns everyday.  Because we are human, we get tired, we get frustrated, and we can begin to doubt the decisions we are making. As a certified Parent Coach® I will support you in strengthening the connection you have with your child.  This is the ultimate in family support, and results in positive changes for the entire family.

Through a series of coaching conversations that can be arranged by phone or in person, I will help you re-discover your dreams for yourself and your children, while helping you design action steps to reach them. You can expect to gather a new appreciation for your parenting strengths and learn how to tap into them more effectively. This is a dynamic and collaborative process between parent and coach that brings the parent's vision into focus and then designs steps toward realizing this dream.  At its foundation, coaching seeks to enhance the connection you have with your child, while reducing your stress and helping you find the joy in parenting again. There is no one size fits all solution... each coaching experience is unique and personalized for your family.

Circle of Security Parenting Groups

All caregivers want what is best for their children.  At times all parents feel lost or without a clue about what our child might need from us. Imagine what it might feel like if you were able to make sense of what your child was really asking from you. The Circle of Security® Parenting™ program is based on decades of research about how secure parent-child relationships can be supported and strengthened.

These supportive small groups focus on a secure parent-child relationship and making sense of what our children really need from us.  Each group runs over 8 weeks and are offered virtually so you can engage from the comfort of your own home.

Using the COSP™ model developed by the Circle of Security originators, our trained Facilitators work with parents and care-givers to help them to:

  • Understand their child’s emotional world by learning to read emotional needs

  • Support their child’s ability to successfully manage emotions

  • Enhance the development of their child's self esteem

  • Honour the innate wisdom and desire for their child to be secure
